Rooibos

Rooibos: naturally caffeine-free and surprisingly versatile

Rooibos is a special drink that originally comes from South Africa. Unlike green and black tea, rooibos is not made from the tea plant, but from the needle-like leaves of the rooibos shrub. For this reason, rooibos is technically also known as a herbal infusion. The drink is naturally caffeine-free and is known for its smooth, approachable flavour.

Pure rooibos has a distinctive warm, slightly sweet and mild flavour. This makes the infusion enjoyable on its own, but also particularly suitable as a base for flavoured blends. That is why De Zeeuwse Sommelier offers not only pure rooibos, but also an extensive collection of loose-leaf rooibos in a variety of flavours.

For example, lovers of fruity flavours can choose Rooibos Mango & Cactus Pear, Rooibos Peach & Lime or Rooibos Strawberry & Vanilla. If you enjoy citrus, you can choose rooibos with orange or limoncello. There are also warming, spiced varieties, such as rooibos with chai, cinnamon or other spices.

One special variety is green rooibos. The rooibos needles are not oxidised, giving it a fresher, lighter flavour than traditional red rooibos. The green rooibos in our collection, for example, makes a lovely base for summer iced tea. Our Mango & Cactus Pear combines green rooibos with mango and cactus pear, giving it a distinctly tropical character.

Caffeine-free rooibos

One important advantage of rooibos is that it is naturally caffeine-free. This makes rooibos an appealing choice for people who want to limit their caffeine intake or are looking for a hot drink later in the day. You don't have to compromise on flavour: with a wide variety of fruity, floral and spiced blends, there's always a rooibos to suit your taste.

Other caffeine-free categories include herbal tea and fruit tea.

How to brew rooibos

Rooibos is easy to prepare. Ideally, use water at around 95°C and steep the rooibos for about 5 minutes. Rooibos does not usually turn bitter quickly if you steep it for a little longer. This means you can take your time making a strong, aromatic infusion. The recommended brewing instructions may vary for specific blends, so always check the relevant product page.

Rooibos can be enjoyed both hot and cold. Fruity rooibos blends are especially well suited to making your own iced tea . Brew the rooibos a little stronger than usual, let it cool and serve over ice, optionally with fresh fruit or a little honey.

Discover our collection of loose-leaf rooibos and be surprised by the versatility of this naturally caffeine-free infusion. From pure and smooth to fruity, fresh and spiced, there is a rooibos for every moment of the day.
