Coffee for a French Press: Full of Flavor and Pure in Character

The cafetière, better known internationally as the French Press, is a popular brewing method among coffee lovers who enjoy a full-bodied, aromatic cup of coffee. Because the ground coffee comes into direct contact with the hot water, oils and flavor compounds that would be trapped by a paper filter are retained. The result is a strong coffee with plenty of body, a rich texture and an intense aroma.

How does a French Press work?

With a French Press, coarsely ground coffee is placed in the glass carafe, then hot water is added. The coffee steeps for around four minutes. The metal filter is then slowly pressed down, leaving the ground coffee at the bottom so the brewed coffee above the filter can be poured out. This so-called full immersion method ensures even extraction and a full-flavored experience.

Which coffee is best for a French Press?

Almost any quality coffee can be brewed in a French Press, but medium-roasted blends and single estate coffees often shine brightest. Brazilian and Colombian coffees produce a smooth, rounded cup with notes of chocolate and nuts, while Ethiopian, Kenyan or Tanzanian coffees offer more fruity and floral aromas. Because the French Press retains many of the coffee's oils and aromas, the coffee's natural characteristics come through particularly well.

Our freshly roasted coffee beans are therefore an excellent choice for this brewing method. By packaging the beans shortly after roasting, we ensure their aroma and flavor are preserved at their best.

What grind size is suitable?

Always use a coarse grind for a French Press. A grind that is too fine can allow coffee particles through the metal filter and may also result in bitter, over-extracted coffee. A coarse grind gives the water enough time to draw out the flavors from the coffee, while the filter effectively holds back the grounds. This creates a smooth, full-bodied and balanced cup of coffee.
--> Choose your grind size before adding the coffee to your shopping cart. For a French Press, choose grind size 7. Would you like your coffee ground a little more coarsely? You can let us know in the comments/instructions on the shopping cart page.
