Coffee for a Cona: a unique combination of science and flavor

The Cona is a classic brewing method that has fascinated coffee lovers for over a century. This elegant glass device works on the vacuum principle and is not only a pleasure to look at, but also produces an exceptionally refined cup of coffee. The combination of immersion and filtration creates a flavor that is both clean and full-bodied, allowing the coffee’s distinctive characteristics to shine through.

How does a Cona work?

A Cona consists of two glass globes. Water is heated in the lower globe. The pressure from the water vapor pushes the water up into the upper globe, where it mixes with the ground coffee. After the coffee has steeped briefly, the heat source is removed. A vacuum forms, drawing the brewed coffee back through the filter into the lower globe. The result is an exceptionally clean, aromatic cup of coffee with plenty of flavor nuances.

Which coffee is best suited to a Cona?

The Cona is ideal for coffees where origin takes center stage. That’s why we especially recommend Specialty Coffee with a story: that is, Microlots and other Farmers Direct coffees. These coffees are characterized by refined aromas, fruity notes, floral accents, and a natural sweetness that come beautifully to the fore with this brewing method.

A smooth, medium-roasted blend can also taste excellent in a Cona. Dark-roasted espressos are generally less suitable, as their intense roast can overpower the subtle qualities of this brewing method.

What grind is suitable?

For a Cona, we recommend a coarse grind (grind size 8). This grind size ensures optimal extraction during contact with the water, while allowing very little coffee through the filter. An even coarser grind produces a flat flavor, while a grind that is too fine can slow the flow through the filter and make the coffee bitter.
However, some Cona systems have a finer-mesh filter, for which a standard drip grind (5) works perfectly well. It’s a matter of experimenting, then.!

With the right grind, freshly roasted coffee beans, and careful preparation, a Cona shows just how versatile coffee can be. This brewing method combines an impressive brewing process with an exceptionally clean taste experience. For lovers of refined filter coffee and distinctive origins, the Cona is one of the most wonderful ways to discover coffee.
