Coffee for filter brewing: pure, refined and full of flavor

Filter coffee is one of the most popular brewing methods in the world. Unlike espresso, where water is forced through the coffee under high pressure, hot water flows gently through the ground coffee when brewing filter coffee. This creates a clean, smooth cup of coffee in which the subtle aromas and character of the coffee beans really shine.

How does filter coffee work?

With filter coffee, hot water is slowly poured over ground coffee. This can be done automatically with a coffee maker or by hand using a pour-over dripper, such as a Hario V60, Kalita Wave or Chemex. As the water passes through, it extracts the flavors and aromas from the coffee. A paper filter traps most of the oils and fine coffee particles, resulting in a clean, fresh and elegant cup of coffee.

Because the extraction takes place relatively gently, filter coffee reveals many subtle flavor notes. This is precisely why this brewing method is a favorite among lovers of Single Estate coffees and Specialty Coffee.

Which coffee is best for filter brewing?

Almost any high-quality coffee is suitable for filter brewing, but light to medium-roasted coffee beans often taste best. Single Estate coffees showcase the unique characteristics of their origin, such as floral aromas, fruity notes or a refined sweetness. Well-balanced blends are also an excellent choice if you enjoy a rounded, smooth and approachable cup of coffee.

Because filter coffee produces a clean flavor, it is easier to taste the differences between origins, roast profiles and processing methods. This makes it the ideal brewing method for anyone who enjoys discovering new coffees.

Which grind is suitable?

The right grind is essential for good filter coffee and varies depending on the brewing method.

For a classic filter coffee maker or Moccamaster, we recommend a medium-fine grind (grind 5). Since the water passes through the filter relatively quickly, this grind ensures optimal extraction and a pleasing balance of sweetness, body and brightness.

Using a pour-over dripper, such as a Hario V60, Kalita Wave or Chemex? Then a slightly coarser grind (grind 6) is usually the best choice. This gives the water enough time to extract the flavors evenly from the coffee, resulting in a clean, balanced cup without bitterness.

With freshly roasted coffee beans and the right grind, you can get the most out of every brewing method. Explore our range of coffee for filter brewing and discover just how pure, refined and flavorful a well-brewed filter coffee can be.
