In the world of Specialty Coffee, you occasionally come across a new gem. And it had been a while since we last had a coffee from Tanzania, so we’re all the more delighted to add this coffee from APK (African Plantations Kilimanjaro) to our range.
This coffee has fresh citrus notes, like our Colombian coffee, along with lovely, typically African floral notes.
Better for people and the environment
Thanks to the plantation’s high elevation, mineral-rich volcanic soil and stable, sunny climate near the equator, coffee plants thrive here exceptionally well. Meltwater from Kilimanjaro supplies the plantations through a smart irrigation system, and all the energy on the farm comes from the sun – a sustainable solution in a region with limited access to electricity.
With every kilo of coffee from Tanzania, we support APK’s Maize Project, which provides children at 38 primary schools in the region with a nutritious meal every day. That’s good for the children and for the future. Learning on an empty stomach is difficult, and parents have an extra incentive to send their children to school.
APK Estate
On the fertile slopes of mighty Kilimanjaro lies APK Estate: a unique coffee plantation where Colombian expertise meets rich African soil. African Plantations Kilimanjaro is part of the family business Oro Molido, which has been producing coffee in Colombia for three generations. Since 2010, they have brought their knowledge and craftsmanship to Tanzania, where they grow premium Arabica coffee in a way that is unique in the region: with care for people, the environment and quality.
What makes this coffee truly special are the people behind it. Every coffee bean is planted, picked and processed by hand by local workers who carry out their work with care and dedication. APK believes that the quality of Specialty Coffee starts with the people, and therefore invests wholeheartedly in their well-being. By encouraging local leadership and working with cooperatives, not only does the coffee flourish, but so does the community. Their foundation supports schools and healthcare in the region – 38 schools have received maize, and medical check-ups are more accessible than ever.
